SNUB-NOSED MONKEY RESEARCH & CONSERVATION EXPEDITON '99
The Yunnan golden monkey or Snub nosed monkey, Rrhinopithecus bieti, is one of the rarest and most endangered primates of the Old World. It lives in coniferous forests on snow-covered mountain slopes and feeds mainly on moss and lichen. It has been protected since 1977 but its conservation is hampered by the paucity of knowledge about its behaviour and ecology. The expedition aimed to assess issues regarding the integration of the conservation of the Snub-nosed monkey with local development within Baima Xueshan Nature Reserve. The project combined three different areas of study, concentrating on the group of monkeys living in the forest around Nanren village: monkey habitat and population demographics; forest distribution and history around the Nanren valley; a participatory rural appraisal of the resource use, interaction with the environment and development aspirations of the residents of Nanren village.
