PENTLAND SOUTH POLE EXPEDITION: TRANS-ANTARCTIC CROSSING 1992-93
Ranulph Fiennes and Mike Stroud became the first team to walk across the Antarctic via the South Pole, the longest unsupported Polar journey ever made. Base leader was Mrs Morag Howell. The two men walked more than 1,350 miles, averaging more than 15 miles a day. Their journey took them across the Filchner Ice Shelf, through the mountains up to 11,000 feet on the Antarctic Plateau and the South Pole. From there they travelled on to the descent of the Mill and Beardmore Glaciers and the edge of the continent. They had covered another 100 miles of the Ross Ice shelf before deciding to end the expedition with both their record breaking objectives achieved. Money was also raised for the Multiple Sclerosis Society (over £3 million). Unique physiological studies of the effects of starvation were completed for A.P.R.E. by Dr. Stroud.
